Exclusive vs shared HVAC leads
A shared HVAC lead is sold to three to eight contractors at once and closes at 10–20%. An exclusive lead goes to one contractor and closes at 40–60%. Shared leads are cheaper per lead ($15–$80 versus $45–$300) and more expensive per booked job, because you pay for every lead whether or not you were the first person the homeowner spoke to.

Why the close-rate gap is structural, not a quality difference
The homeowner behind a shared lead and the homeowner behind an exclusive lead can be the same person with the same broken condenser. What differs is how many times their phone rings. By the time the third contractor calls, the homeowner has two quotes and is comparing on price. That is not a lead any more, it is an auction, and auctions compress margin by design.
This is also why "we only share with up to five" is not a reassurance. Five contractors paying $40 each means the marketplace collected $200 on one homeowner and stays profitable whether the job is booked or not.
Exclusivity by territory versus exclusivity by lead
There are two different things sold under the word "exclusive". Per-lead exclusivity means this particular lead is not resold — but the next one might go to a competitor, and you are still billed per lead. Territory exclusivity means one contractor holds a defined area and every call from it belongs to them.
844-JOB-HVAC sells the second kind: one contractor per ZIP code, a flat $149 for the first month and $299 a month after, no per-lead charges at any volume. Coverage is currently 29,191 town territories across 33,046 ZIP codes and 51 states, and you can see the full territory map on the coverage pages, and check whether a specific ZIP is open on the availability checker.
Common questions
- What is the difference between exclusive and shared HVAC leads?
- A shared lead is sold to three to eight contractors at the same time and closes at 10–20%. An exclusive lead goes to one contractor only and closes at 40–60%. Shared leads cost $15–$80 each, exclusive leads $45–$300.
- Are exclusive HVAC leads worth the higher price?
- Usually, because the comparison that matters is cost per booked job, not cost per lead. A $30 shared lead closing at 15% costs $200 per job; a $90 exclusive lead closing at 50% costs $180, and it does not cost you a price-competitive quote.
- Does exclusive mean the lead is never resold, or that I own the area?
- It depends on the provider, and the two are very different. Per-lead exclusivity means only that one lead is not resold. Territory exclusivity means one contractor holds a defined ZIP or region and receives every call from it.
